Tacit's illumio Receives TRUSTe Trusted Download Certification
February 21, 2007, Palo Alto, CA - illumio, an expertise search and networking tool for groups, is among the first software programs to be whitelisted by TRUSTe as a Trusted Download, a rigorous certification program that ensures certified applications are safe and consumer-friendly. Tacit Software Inc., the leading provider of automated expertise and knowledge discovery software and developer of illumio, is one of just eight companies with software certified for this inaugural whitelist by TRUSTe, the leading internet privacy certification organization.
“Bravo to illumio and all the software applications which have achieved our exacting standards for Trusted Download certification,” said Fran Maier, executive director and president of TRUSTe. “Until now, there have not been any industry best practices for giving consumers meaningful notice and informed choices with respect to Internet-downloadable software. We want to give power back to the consumer and make it easier to identify trustworthy applications.”
As part of the certification process, TRUSTe tests software operation and reviews the user experience for permissions and control. Certified software is required to provide users with clear and conspicuous notice about advertising, tracking behavior, data collection and other software behaviors. Certified applications also must obtain informed consent prior to download, provide an easy-to-use uninstall and control over software operations. Once certified, applications will be monitored for ongoing compliance.
